Partnership Projects

Through our Partners Program, Courage International has established a pilot project with the Afore district, which is located in the Oro province of Papua New Guinea. In conjunction with the local pastors and leaders, we have set up a co-operative called the Afore Economic Development Corporation (AEDC).

Through AEDC we have formed partnerships with the local coffee producers to purchase, transport and market their annual crop of more than 5,000 bags of organically grown Arabica coffee. We are also forming partnerships with cocoa and vanilla producers, holders of extensive timber plantations, small mining ventures and other producers from the district. Our purpose is to assist the 12,000 people living in the district to sustainably develop and market their resources, increase their skills, gain employment and undertake economic and community development projects.

Coffee

In excess of 5,000 bags of Organically grown coffee is produced annually. At present coffee prices are at a 100 year low and yet we have been able to substantially increase the net returns paid to producers more than previously paid by unscrupulous buyers.

Cocoa

More than 500,000 Cocoa trees were planted in the district more than 10 years ago. These trees have now matured, with each tree producing approx 100 pods per year with 30 beans per pod. That equates to 1.5 Billion Cocoa beans annualy.

Vanilla

Vanilla, which has been described as Liquid Gold is now being planted and some will soon be ready for harvest.
